The thing nobody tells you: vivid color can’t lighten anything

Vivid pigment is translucent. It has no lifting power at all — it simply shows up on whatever base is underneath it. Put hot pink on dark brown hair and you get dark brown hair with a faint reddish sheen in sunlight.

Which means almost every vivid service is really two jobs: a controlled lightening process to get you to a pale, even base, and then the color itself. The lightening is the difficult part, the expensive part, and the part that determines whether your color looks incredible or patchy.

How many sessions will it take?

It depends entirely on where you’re starting:

• Already light blonde — often a single session
• Mid-brown virgin hair — frequently one session, sometimes two for pastels
• Dark or previously colored hair — commonly two or more, spaced weeks apart
• Box-dyed or henna-treated hair — needs assessment in person; box dye lifts unevenly and can leave stubborn bands

If someone promises you platinum-based pastel from near-black hair in one appointment, they are either not being straight with you or are prepared to damage your hair to do it. Staged lifting isn’t a colorist being slow — it’s the only way to arrive with hair that still holds pigment.

Why hair health decides your result

Over-processed hair is porous and uneven. It grabs pigment inconsistently, so the color goes on blotchy, and it releases pigment fast, so it fades within a fortnight. Wrecking your hair to get bright therefore costs you the very brightness you wanted.

Budget for the upkeep, not just the appointment

The first appointment is the headline number, but vivid color needs refreshing — typically every four to six weeks to stay properly bright. Work out that ongoing cost before you start. Plenty of people can afford the transformation and then find the maintenance uncomfortable, which is a miserable position to be in with half-faded pink hair.
